There is a common misconception that employers only conduct background checks to see if you have a criminal history. From an employer’s perspective, however, there are quite a few different things that may affect your ability to do a certain job that these reports can shed light on. Oftentimes, employers even use these reports as a way of making sure that all of the information on your application is correct.
The sad truth is that many people are not honest about their past when they fill out a job application or submit a resume. Employers use background checks to verify that the information is true. A good example has to do with education. If a particular applicant claims that they graduated from college, there should be educational records that can back up this claim. Likewise, they may be able to find information on your work history with past companies or how much you were paid at your previous job. If they find information on your resume that doesn’t jive with the information they find in your background check, it could ruin your chances of getting the job.
Many times employers will also look to see if you have a criminal record. Certain positions are more sensitive than others. For instance, if you will be handling cash or working with children, they need to know that there are no red flags surrounding these situations.
Some companies may also check your credit. Although it may seem like your credit history has very little to do with your ability to perform a certain job, it actually says a lot about your ability to follow through on your commitments. Additionally, if you are applying for a job where you will handle money, the employer needs to know that you can be trusted.
Any past worker’s compensation claims that have been filed on your behalf may also come up in your background check. Depending on how similar the job where you were injured is to the job that you are applying for, this may affect your ability to get hired. However, they cannot turn down your application simply because you have a disability or injury as long as it won’t interfere with your ability to do whatever job you are applying for.
As you can see, background checks can provide employers with valuable information about your past that they can use to judge whether or not you are a good candidate for a particular position.
